Climate Change over the Centuries
Levels of CO2 in the atmosphere have always varied and temperatures across the earth have also changed over time. This is clearly represented by the Ice Ages. These changes are relatively slow and CO2 levels have never risen above 300 parts per million.
What is happening now is a very fast increase in CO2 levels over a very short period of time. Temperature and sea levels follow CO2 levels fairly closely as can be seen from the graph below.

How do we know Climate Change is happening?
For over a century, science has shown that greenhouse gases trap heat. As shown on the graph below, an increase in greenhouse gases has moved in tandem with an increase in surface and ocean temperatures.
However, surface temperatures alone do not reveal the extent in which greenhouse gases cause climate change. In fact, the ocean absorbs 90% of the heat trapped by greenhouse gases. Evidence shows that every layer is warming, even in the deepest depths, proving that climate change is happening.
